We do not have the identification of these bathing beauties of anoth er generation but they were local. Manuel (919) 278-7333 Hwy. 211 • Southport Aerobics canceled Water aerobics classes held at the Arboretum community pool have been canceled. The classes were sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. Jimmy Home and Ray Houston, who went on an impromptu 22-hour ride clinging to the bottom of their 25-foot outboard Saturday and Sunday, had luck riding with them. Initially they had the good fortune to go into water far enough offshore that it still was warm, then had favorable weather that kept them relatively safe. And of course there was the freighter Sunday morning that spotted them, some 12 miles southeast of Frying Pan Tower, after many others had not. From that point it was largely a matter of course — Coast Guard helicop ter, Long Beach rescue unit, and the hospital. Luck was with them indeed. But luck won’t always do it, and those who venture afloat, particularly occasional mariners, should learn from the experience of Home and Hous ton, whose boat swamped so suddenly they had time to don life jackets and do little more. No radio alarm; no flares, smokes or dyes; no lights to shine at ships that passed in the night. We’re all required to have safety equipment aboard our boats, but no body is required - and few have the foresight - to put it where it is im mediately accessible. Some of the life jackets are here, some there, the flares haven’t been seen since April and you loaned the flashlight to your cousin last Thursday. Radio? Who’s required to have a portable, water proof radio? Who thinks it will ever happen to him? These days, offshore trips should be on the buddy system. Emergency equipment should be where it can go in the water when you do, and remain' afloat. Trust to skill and planning, not luck. About 250 people turned out tor the Governor s Cup bullish awards presentation in Raleigh November 16 and saw Darrell Morgan of Atlantic Beach honored as outstanding conservationist, Rom Whitaker of Hatteras recognized as outstanding billfishermen and Glenn Taylor of Sanford and Joe Taylor of Wilmington, who frequently fish out of Southport, presented with the outstanding billfish trophy. Other awards were made for outstanding wahoo, tuna and dolphin catches. The' Governor’s Cup is a scries event involving seven billfish tourna ments throughout the season. Neither of our local, tournaments participate, but we’d like to see a Cape Fear event develop to the point that it would be included. Perhaps the promoters of either the Southport Marina or Bald Head Island tournaments will show some interest next year. Cash Caroon, chairman of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commis sion, which sets conservation and utilization policy for state salt waters, lias been elected district director of the North Carolina Fisheries Associa tion, one of ten who either represent districts or commodities. Commodity directors of the trade organization include Sherrill Styron of Oriental, shrimp; Jimmy Johnson of Washington, crab; Billy Carl Tillett of Wanchese, finfish; and Jule Wheatley of Beaufort, non-edible catches.
